Groove Construction Bringing Nashville’s 83 Freight to Life

Groove Construction is working with the developers of a new apartment community in Nashville to help bring unique and affordable living spaces for residents in the city’s popular Wedgewood Houston neighborhood.

When 83 Freight opens next year, it will be the largest standalone apartment complex in Nashville constructed solely from used shipping containers. 83 Freight is relying on Groove Construction to make it happen.

83 Freight developer/owner Shawn Bailes recently talked with Nashville television station WSMV NBC 4 about the project:

“So, we’re taking two containers together and then cutting out the inside so you have more of a traditional living style. The shipping container is more of just a nod to the maker origins of Wedgewood Houston. It’s obviously industrial chic and it’s something that’s extremely durable.”

You can see what the final units will look like on the website for the Nashville Smith Gee Studio, the project architect.

Groove Construction Lends Expertise

Once completed, 83 Freight will contain 83 studio apartments, including 320-square-foot studio apartments; one-bedroom units of 640 square feet; and two-bedroom units of 960 and 1,280 square feet.

Groove Construction has been busy modifying and installing the shipping containers at 83 Freight to build distinctive living spaces for working professionals who do not require as many square feet as a full-size home.

In addition to assembling the overall structure, Groove also is handling the extensive steelwork on the project and all the preparations for the suspended concrete walkways that will tie the units together.

Groove’s experienced professionals also are being called on to install the ornamental iron balconies, rooftop terraces, and spiral stairs at 83 Freight.

This is just the latest example of Groove Construction’s work on some of the most dynamic residential living communities in Nashville, which include the Bento Box development in the same Wedgewood Houston neighborhood.

  1. G’ morning ….
I’m interested in learning more about your experiences (good and bad) with the 83 Freight project. Im with an eastern Canadian development firm considering similar projects. Im hoping to speak with a project manager – Id like to see the project if that’s an option, I thought to contact here before reaching out to the architects – but you may suggest that more appropriate- please advise.

  2. We love the work you did on the 83 Freight project. We are looking to build more affordable housing options in SE Idaho and are working on design options. Would love your opinion on whether or not building with shipping containers made the project more affordable. Thanks!
